At SAP Mentor headquarters in SAP TechEd Las Vegas, Dennis caught up with Mentor Daniel Graverson to talk about the barriers to SAP development for smaller SAP shops. Graverson, an independent consultant and respected SAP developer, explains the current barriers to entry. Daniel makes his case for why an Apple-style revenue sharing model and lower upfront costs would be a welcome change for developers and SAP customers alike.

Thanks for talking about the problem. Hope that SAP finds a way to solve it.
I was just listening to Daniel, mentioning that in 3 years no progress has been made. Instead I would like to say that in 3 years things just got worse. A few years back there were at least some options for developers, such as the SAP discovery server, Netweaver Developer subscriptions and later Netweaver Developer licenses. Currently none of these exist anymore. It is apparent that although a few brave individuals within SAP are really trying hard to build a nice ecosystem for developers, it is quite clear that the legal and conventional ERP licensing department have the last laugh for now. I have set my hopes on Netweaver OnDemand though, and hope SAP will think of (individual) developers when they announce licensing and pricing options.
